West Wing Hotel
Zhengzhou
2016

Traditional homestay products, relying on scenic views, are often portrayed by the market as an ethereal, otherworldly retreat. In contrast, "West Wing," located within a film town, is enveloped in a vibrant and worldly atmosphere. The former design approach of seeking seclusion would inevitably detach itself from the overall environmental context. As the theme of this project, during the era when Peking Opera flourished, China was deeply "earthly"—earthy in the intricate art of cloisonné enamel, earthy in the vividly painted red-and-green carved beams and painted rafters, and earthy in the distinct roles of sheng, dan, jing, mo, and chou. Within the ancient Qing Dynasty architecture of the inn, we create a dialogue between old and new, structure and ornamentation, and cultural contrasts. Using fragmented and deconstructive approaches, we respond to that era and interpret the theme of operatic conflict. It is not about formalized, specific opera elements meant merely for admiration; instead, we deconstruct and reassemble impressions, forming logical connections and reshaping the essence of these imageries.
